What Just Happened?

For the past several weeks, Levi has had a tough time getting to sleep at night.  Tonight began no differently.  Instead of falling asleep during his final feeding, he was bright and cheerful and no longer hungry.  I quietly carried him around our dimly-lit home for awhile, then we sat in the rocking chair.  Levi started happily talking to himself, showing no signs of being sleepy.  I decided to see what happened if I laid him in his crib that way.  What a surprise!  After a few minutes of talking to himself, he quieted down.  After another five minutes I ventured in to see if he was asleep.  He was!  He went to sleep all by himself!  No crying, no tireless rocking, no endless feeding.

But. . . .

He was laying on his stomach with his face in the corner of the mattress and the crib bumper.  He was breathing just fine, but it made me nervous.  I moved him out into the center of the crib, but I left him on his tummy because I was afraid of waking him up.  Tummy sleeping is a big no-no nowadays . . . but he actually went to sleep!  Oh boy.  What are we going to do with this guy?

  1. That's great! I'm sure Levi wanted to keep celebrating your birthday.

While tummy sleeping is discouraged these days, we all managed just fine on our tummies as infants. I would have done exactly what you did and moved him to the middle of the crib and left him on his tummy. You're doing a great job!

  2. Both Evan and Olivia were put to sleep on their stomachs--that was before the "Back to sleep" campaign. Levi's full of surprises--guess he wants to keep you on your toes.

  3. Sounds like Levi does what he wants to do and does it well. What a guy!
